Tech-Nite was created by Leslie D. Gray and Andre Thornton (R.I.P.) in 1982.  In 1982, most character origins were derived from a defining moment like an explosion, radioactive material or they were a mutant.  Tech-Nite was an archaeologist who found an ancient stone, which is the source of his powers.
